  1. Greetings Roma,

In order to contact spirit entities you’ll need to recite your own form of prayers or orikis in order to invoke them. By prayers, I mean your own special way of praising them, as well as acknowledging their attributes in order to get their attention.

For example, if I want to invoke an ancestor, I could say mojuba (means to worship or to acknowledge in Yoruba) Grandmother Rose. Or I could say mojuba Grandmother Rose, the seamstress, and mother of Judy and Mildred Rose to be more specific. Therefore in order to invoke whatever spirit you’re trying to contact, you’ll need to be somewhat familiar with their attributes.

Additionally I would use a candle during an invocation. This helps to focus your attention, and also helps the spirit to find you. I also like to burn incense, particularly for my ancestor invocations, as the smoke helps to send your message across to them.

I would encourage you to get HRU’s book which is the required reading for the novice Umfundi, “Grasping The Root of Divine Power”. How to establish a dialogue with spirit is clearly outlined in his book. There you will find orikis for each of the 7 Major Afrakan Powers, as well as background information on these energies, and what to offer them during your rituals. The podcasts are also extremely helpful, and provide more in-depth information on the orishas and how to invoke them. More information on the book and the podcasts are available on this website.

Also keep in mind that spirits energies do not speak to us in the form of words or conversation as you and I would speak to each other. They speak to us in the form of symbols which you would need to interpret in order to understand their messages.

The two books listed below provide a lot of guidance on symbols and their meanings. These are available on

The Women’s Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects by Barbara Walker and
The Dictionary of Symbolism: Cultural Icons and the Meanings Behind Them by Hans Bierdermann

I will that this helps you establish contact with spirit!
